About the story
This year’s show, “Oh, Deer!”, by Judy M. Dove, is a play within a play, a lively retelling of the North Carolina folk tale “Daniel Boone and the Deer”. A group of students have been assigned a Social Studies class project. They decide to write a play based on the old Daniel Boone tale and to perform it for their class presentation. The ensuing escapades bring closer together a group of friends who learn about teamwork while they learn about production.
Auditions will be held on Saturday, September 20, from 2:30-4:30 in the RLT Studio. Those auditioning are not required to bring a prepared monologue. Candidates are asked to come dressed in comfortable clothing allowing for freedom of movement and closed toe “sneaker” type shoes.
Auditions will consist of movement exercises, improvisations, cold readings from the script, and ensemble building exercises. The Director is looking for vocal projection, enunciation and expression; the ability to create a variety of characters; and a desire to grow as an actor.
About the roles
Each cast member will play a character (in all caps) who plays a character (in italics) within their play.
KAT, the DIRECTOR/one of the SISTERS; a leader-type, sensible, creative, fun, focused.
BRYAN, the SCRIPT-WRITER/FATHER of the mysterious DEER GIRL; intellectual, calm, poetic. Insists on speaking with an unidentifiable accent from somewhere in Europe, which doesn’t fit the play, so he ends up having to do his part as a mime.
BELINDA, the ANIMAL-WRANGLER/one of the SISTERS; promotes peace, love, and animal rescue.
MANDY, in charge of POSTERS AND PUBLICITY/front end of CHEVY the HORSE; fun, sense of humor, good sport; constantly on her cell phone.
MIKE/ DANIEL BOONE; doesn’t want to be in the play, but ends up having fun.
ANGIE, the STAGE MANAGER/back end of CHEVY the HORSE; tries to keep everyone from fighting.
ALYSSA, PROPS/SET/SOUND/LIGHTS/COSTUMES, and plays THE RACOON, Daniel Boone’s trusty sidekick (a puppet); arts-‘n’-craftsy, creative, can make anything with tape and glue.
ARIANNA, the ACTRESS/the DEER-WHO-TURNS-INTO-A-GIRL; charming, glows with passion for acting.
