May 22, 23 & 24, 2009
RLT Outdoor Stephenson Amphitheatre (General Admission Seating)

Click to download the poster in PDF format

The Sourdough Philosophy Circus and Pageant is about the need for human fermentation. Human fermentation concerns those parts of the human body that are not governed by the government, like the guts and the gutsy parts of the brain. This is also applies to zebras and city bred cows, dancing bears and independent donkeys. The show is run by a bunch of cooks, specialists in cooking the various stews and pancakes of our everyday first world existence. Additional commentary is provided by the Rotten Idea Theater Company. Music is by the Sourdough Philosophy Brass Band and a quartet of sheep.

Visit the concessions area or bring your own picnic for a fun family outing in the outdoor amphitheatre located adjacent to the rose garden on the Raleigh Little Theatre Complex.

Indy Weekly says Bread & Puppet Theatre is worth seeing. See Our Picks: 8 Days a Week.

Mom2Mom also says the show is one of thier Best Weekend Bets.

A short history of Bread & Puppet Theater

The Bread & Puppet Theater was founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann on New York City’s Lower East Side. Besides rod-puppet and hand-puppet shows for children, the concerns of the first productions were rents, rats, police and other problems of that neighborhood. More complex theater pieces, in which sculpture, music, dance and language were equal partners, followed. The puppets grew bigger and bigger. Annual presentations for Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and Memorial Day often included children and adults from the community as participants. Many performances were done in the street. During the Vietnam War, Bread & Puppet staged block-long precessions involving hundreds of people.

In 1970 Bread & Puppet moved to Vermont as theater-in-residence at Goddard College, combining puppetry with gardening and bread baking in a serious way, learning to live in the countryside and letting itself be influenced by the experience.

In 1974 the Theater moved to a farm in Glover in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. The 140-year-old hay barn was transformed into a museum for veteran puppets. Our Domestic Resurrection Circus, a two-day outdoor festival of puppetry shows, was presented annually through 1998.

The company makes its income from touring new and old productions on the American continent and abroad and from the sales of Bread & Puppet Press posters and publications. The traveling puppet shows range from tightly composed theater pieces presented by members of the company, to extensive outdoor pageants which require the participation of many volunteers.

Bread & Puppet is one of the oldest, nonprofit, self-supporting theatrical companies in this country.

Attending a performance in the Amphitheatre

You are welcome to bring your own dinner, however since the amphitheatre is part of a City of Raleigh park, please adhere to these rules:

  • No coolers allowed
  • No glass bottles allowed
  • Only beer and wine purchased from our vendor may be brought into the amphitheatre.

Bringing blankets or chairs makes seating more comfortable. Lawnchairs or the folding chairs that come in a bag work well. There is grass between the concrete benches and chairs fit well in that space.

Food coupons

To make the sales easier for our volunteers in the Food Court, we use a food coupon system. Please purchase coupons at the tent in the parking lot before getting your food or drinks.

Vendors and concessions workers cannot take cash, only the coupons. Each coupon = $1.
